You’re probably thinking, “is that supposed to be a person?.” I have an answer to that question: No. This is not necessarily a person. It is one of the Three Fates from Greek Mythology. The one who gets to cut the thread, ending someone’s life. Atropos. I’ve always liked Greek mythology, ever since I can remember. This painting was originally going to be of all three fates but then I decided to make it more personal and all about my beloved Atropos. I wanted it to be a blue monochromatic painting but then I used that one color for the moon and I fell in love. Everything went pretty smoothly with this painting. The part that took the longest was taking a good picture of it. After I got a good picture of it then I edited it so it would look like how it does if I am looking at it in person. I learned a lot while making this painting and I am so grateful for that. The reason of the name is because of a joke. Whenever I go on Facebook there’ll be some middle school kids posting about how their friends have been with them “through thick and thin.” That is also why I made some parts of the thread thicker than others, to show the “thick and thin” parts of someone’s life. It is all for my amusement.

Through Thick And Thin

Acrylic Paint on Cardboard

I started this painting with a very different plan. I had wanted my painting to express what I feel about religion. I think this painting ended up expressing something completely different. It looks so chaotic and crazy and that was kind of part of the plan. I did the chaotic like background first and finished everything and then I added those crazy, textured corners. I added accents with chalk on some of the thorns and made some thorns completely out of chalk. I used light green and white chalk to kind of calm everything on the painting and so it shows on the darker thorns. I made something beautiful looking and destroyed and that was my plan. What is why the title is what it is. It wasn’t as bad making this painting and it was pretty calming and actually stress relieving. Doing those crazy corners and the borders of the canvas actually calmed my anger and stuff down.It felt great. I have mixed feelings about this painting, I like some parts of it but not all. I definitely like the chaotic parts. It was my very first time painting a rose so I do not think it is that bad, could definitely be better though. I had inspiration for this painting by looking at the sky, which I adore so much. Every time I look at the sky I am mesmerized by its beauty but then I start thinking of this messed up out and how it’s going to crap.

If this world goes to crap there is literally no reason for me to live. I was also inspired by lyrics from my favorite band, Pierce The Veil. “Can we create something beautiful and destroy it.”

Watercolor is such a fast process it’s crazy. I enjoyed doing this painting because of all the new techniques I learned.

I wanted to have an emotional value here but it didn’t come off as strong. I decided on the idea of the ocean because I am actually really scared of open water. I also happen to love water though. I love swimming and just the freedom of water. I wanted it to look inviting and nice. I also wanted some parts to look dark, kind of. In the end, I had so much fun. I fell in love with a lot of colors. This painting has a lot of blue but I love it and it’s one of the colors I fell in love with. Watercolor is such a fast and crazy thing and 8 honestly advice anyone to try it.

I get to go back to my home country in less than a month. I started really thinking about that and got excited. This year I really learned to appreciate the arts and everything involved with it so when I was thinking about my beloved country, México, I also thought of all the art and wonderful things there. I was thinking of the food and the arts together which led me to think of the wonderful painted plates that you can find at the tianguis in Tonala. (A tianguis is a farmer’s market of sorts, there’s all kinds of hand-made things. The ones in Tonala are the big ones that everyone knows and they’re known for people selling beautiful hand-painted and hand-made household items and furniture.) I decided to give it a shot and try something new. This was one of the most fun projects I’ve ever done. It made me feel in touch with my culture and my country and it made me feel happy. Clay is a very interesting and fun to use material and I know that I will be making more of these in the future.
